Dave has been an avid fly fisherman since his grandfather taught him the art of the long rod in 1957 at the age of nine. He also learned early on from his grandfather the love and appreciation of craftsmanship.

Since 1986, Dave has been repairing, restoring and crafting bamboo fly rods - he quit counting at 3000. In 1999, he became one of the founding members of the Custom Rod Builders Guild and still retains membership #17. He has developed a reputation for quality work and affordable pricing, and has shipped rods to all 50 states and 33 countries.

Each year, Dave donates new custom bamboo fly rods to local charity auctions, and through Lulbegrud Creek Fly Rods, is a strong supporter of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Ronald McDonald Houses, Project Healing Waters, Mended Hearts and others.

"It just felt right as I saw the trout rise and cast into the center of the ring, my heart beating with excitement.  My fly barely had time to land when the trout rose again and the fly disappeared down a tiny whirlwind in the clear water. The thin leader tightened in the air, a pale cool spray the length.  Fish on."    Field note from Watauga River, NC 1993.
